Choosing the Right Conservatory Lighting

Conservatory lighting may not have entered into your mind whilst planning your perfect conservatory addition to your home, but it is an important factor to consider. Your conservatory will naturally be very light, airy, spacious and refreshing during the day with a large proportion of the roof and walls being transparent glass. With a conservatory you can enjoy your garden without having to sit in the wind or cold on those all too familiar British grey, cloudy days masquerading as summer. With a conservatory you can maximize the amount of light that enters the room and enjoy your garden without the harsh weather. However, when the sun does begin to set and your conservatory is filled with a lush orange glow in the evenings, your time in the conservatory will draw to a close as will the day.

Many people want to continue enjoying their conservatory during the night time and relax reading and lounging around or socializing with friends or family members. In these situations carefully placed lighting will be required to sustain your relaxing conservatory experience. When night time closes in your conservatory will soak up the pitch black of your garden and this can make you feel much less comfortable. It is important to note that even with a good lighting arrangement there are two problems you now face with your conservatory. These are privacy and comfort, with lights on in your conservatory over night it can be both disturbing to be surrounded by black windows and also not ideal to be on show for anyone looking out their windows or peering into the garden. If you want some night time light in your conservatory don’t forget to pick out the right blinds for your conservatory too. Powerful lighting will also require thick and durable blinds that also compliment the design of your conservatory.

In addition to this, if your conservatory is in shade at some point during the day or if it will be too dark during the most grey of days especially during winter then you should consider lighting just for the day time too, even if you do not plan on using your conservatory at night time and evenings. If you are considering lighting for your perfect conservatory then ceiling lighting is almost always out of the question. In order to fit with regulations conservatory ceilings must be completely transparent with almost all of it windowed. This means many conservatories do not have the ceiling space for a hanging light. It is therefore a matter of choosing between wall lighting, table lighting and floor lighting or a mixture of all three. Consider where you will need your lighting and what type lighting you will have beforehand so that you can plan out the location of your electrical outlets. You will also need to consider electrical heaters in your conservatory too so make sure you accommodate for these when you plan your electrics. It is also a good idea to place conservatory wall lighting switches inside your home so that you can turn on the lights before you have to go inside. Dimmer switches are also very popular choices to allow you to control the intensity of light and the atmosphere in your conservatory.
